Choosing the Right Battery for Camping——LiFePO4 Battery

Choosing the Right Battery for Camping——LiFePO4 Battery

When going camping, camping enthusiasts often struggle to choose the right battery that is efficient and portable at the same time. The LiFePO4 battery is a portable battery that can fulfill these requirements, keeping your lights on and maintaining the necessary electrical equipment while camping.

Some Battery Types
Before we know about LiFePO4 batteries, the most common type of battery is the lead-acid battery, which is widely used.

Flooded Lead-acid battery
The electrolyte is made of water and sulfuric acid and can be used in vehicles, marine vessels and large industries.
They are expensive to maintain and may release harmful gases that are detrimental to health and risk polluting the environment.

AGM
A type of lead-acid battery that is expensive, its full name is Absorbent Glass Mat and it is highly resistant to shock and spillage. They are also safe for use in poorly ventilated areas as they release very little gas;
Require minimal maintenance and do not release harmful gases, but are more expensive and
heavier, bulky and space-consuming.

Gel
Also belongs to a kind of lead-acid battery, adding gelling agent in sulfuric acid, so that the sulfuric acid electrolyte becomes gel. Batteries with a colloidal state of the electrolyte are usually called gel batteries.
They also have a service life of between 2 and 5 years and are used in the marine industry, renewable energy storage and healthcare;
Special care needs to be taken when charging and additional charging related costs may be incurred.

LiFePO4 Battery
It is lithium-ion battery, which, unlike lead-acid batteries, relies on lithium salts for power storage.
As battery energy technology continues to evolve, lithium batteries are being used in a wide range of applications: smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables, electric cars and drones all use lithium-ion batteries, as well as in areas such as defense and healthcare.
LiFePO4 batteries, which are lightweight, have a long service life of about 10 years, are maintenance-free and use a built-in BMS to ensure their safety.
The initial investment is high, but due to their long lifespan, they are more cost-effective in the long term.
Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries are rechargeable batteries that utilize lithium ion technology and an iron phosphate cathode, a chemistry that offers several advantages, storing electrical energy within the battery for later use in powering equipment or appliances to run. During charging, lithium ions migrate from the cathode to the anode where they are stored. Subsequently, during discharge, these ions return to the cathode, releasing energy to power a device or appliance. This is a cyclic process of electrochemical reactions within the LiFePO4 battery.
Because of the various properties of the LFP battery itself, it is suitable for camping, off-grid living, solar home storage, and RV.

Why is it suitable for camping?
First of all, light weight.
Take SANFOU 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 Battery as an example, the weight of this battery is only 1/3 of the weight of the same type of lead-acid battery, which is about 11kg, and this is the weight that a person can lift. (A 100Ah lead-acid battery weighs about 30-60 pounds, while a 100Ah LifePO4 battery weighs only about 22-26 pounds.)
Secondly, the energy density is high. What does energy density mean? It's the amount of energy stored per unit of volume or weight. Maintaining a high level of energy in a smaller, lighter battery means storing more energy in a smaller, more compact form factor without taking up more space. For the same model (SANFOU 12V100Ah LiFePO4 Battery ) the usable capacity is 100% and the depth of discharge is 100%, but lead acid is not recommended to be used at less than 50% of its capacity.
Long Lifespan: With up to 4000-5000 cycles and up to 10 years of use, this long cycle life makes LifePO4 batteries more durable and reliable for frequent camping trips and extended outdoor use.
Low Self-Discharge Rate: LifePO4 batteries have a low self-discharge rate, allowing them to retain their charge longer when not in use, typically losing only about 2-3% of their charge per month. This is ideal for campers who may not use their batteries often and want them to be ready for the next trip without frequent recharging.

Green and non-polluting: It is basically non-polluting in the process of use, and is also known as a green battery. Compared to the heavy metal pollution that may be caused by lead-acid batteries, LFPs are less harmful to the environment and contribute to sustainable development.
Conclusion
When camping, LiFePO4 batteries can enhance the camping experience by providing a reliable and efficient power source that is lightweight, durable, safe and environmentally friendly.
There are several factors to consider when choosing LiFePO4 batteries for camping. First, determine the capacity of the battery you need based on the equipment you will be powering. Avoid power outages on your journey; secondly, the weight and size of the battery, according to your journey needs, choose different lithium iron phosphate battery models (SANFOU LiFePO4 Battery Series: 12V100Ah, 12V100Ah UpGrade, 12V50Ah), if you need to take space and weight into account, these three batteries can be better used for camping journeys. If you still have more needs, we are constantly launching more models, the new larger BMS option of SANFOU 12V200Ah Plus LiFePO4 Battery, equipped with 200A BMS.
In addition, pay attention to the voltage output and compatibility of the battery. It is convenient for you to power different devices, choose according to the actual needs, and follow the battery equipped with instructions.
